Recovering from Addiction to Prescription Medications

I never thought of myself as an addict, but I did end up addicted to anti-anxiety medication after developing Generalized Anxiety Disorder. At some point, the medicine stopped being a way to deal with the nervousness and panic attacks, and became something my body craved. I knew that I needed help fast. Fortunately, a local drug rehab program includes support for people like me. They helped me wean off the medication, use methods like massage therapy to help my nerves heal, and even provided ongoing counseling for our family. I don't know how I would have made it without their help. If you suspect that your medication has crossed the line from being helpful to hurtful, take heart. Let me tell you about my journey out of addiction and back to wholeness.

by Valerie Stevens

Dealing with an addiction to drugs or alcohol can be a struggle for all involved. If you're thinking about making a positive change in your life and want to get the help that you need, it may be time to enroll in a drug and alcohol treatment program. This is an option you'll want to consider if you want a fresh start at life. Take a look at the following information for some helpful tips on what to consider when choosing a drug and alcohol treatment center.

Is the Program Accredited and is the Staff Properly Trained?

You want to be working with a program that is accredited so that you know you're getting good treatment. You should also take care to look into the staff. Are staff members properly trained and licensed for their jobs? Choosing a top-quality program will give you the chance to benefit as much as possible. Don't be afraid to ask when exploring different programs.

Consider the Success Rates

While much of the treatment's results depend on how much a person puts into it, the staff and the program can also make a difference. When considering different facilities, don't be afraid to ask to see their success rate statistics. This can give you a better idea as to how effective a certain program or center is. You want to make sure that you're putting yourself in a place that will give you the best chance to be successful at beating your disease.

Does the Program Consider Overall Health?

Those who have dealt with addiction for a long time often find that their overall health has decreased greatly. It's important to find a center that not only caters to your addiction needs, but also to that of your health. You may want to consider a program that offers assistance with nutrition and physical health as well, so that you can be as healthy as possible when making these big changes in your life.

How Long and How Intense is the Program

Depending on your own individual needs, it may make sense to be in a lengthy program. Some treatment options programs only last a couple of weeks while others last several months. It's important to consider the intensity and length of program so that you can make sure that your needs are met. If you need to, ask about other program options.
